BlackBerry PlayBook vs. iPad vs. Galaxy Tab vs. Streak: the tale of the tape

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/28/blackberry-playbook-vs-ipad-vs-galaxy-tab-vs-streak-the-tale/
What a day -- yesterday, that is. Research in Motion finally announced its long-awaited BlackBerry tablet, the 7-inch PlayBook (thankfully not named the BlackPad). While there's still quite a few missing details, and nary an unit in site for us to try first-hand, we've still got a sampling of specs for this little guy to go tte--tte on the quantitative field of proverbial battle, at least as it can be seen so far (that early 2011 release date is still a ways off). Looks very promising so far, lined up against Apple's iPad, Samsung's Galaxy Tab, and the Dell Streak, but our known unknowns -- i.e. price, app support, and overall feel of using the QNX-built operating system -- are what will really make or break the slate. Until that time, enjoy our number-crunching below:

I like it probably not the best out there, but it works for me 2010-09-05
By jenn
i like the bright reddish/orange color, i like the general design of the product and i like the material its made out of doesnt scratch my ipad. overall, its exactly what i was looking for in an ipad case. so far, ive gotten lots of compliments on it and the color. the only thing i would say is that its not the most padded case, so if thats what youre looking for, i might keep looking. this case, in general, just keeps your ipad from getting scratched or knocked around and dinged up in your purse or whatever you might be carrying it in. if you were to drop it or something, i dont know how well it would hold up (it probably wouldnt get scratched, but i dont know if it would get dented or if you would jar the ipad and break something internally). also, i do use the plastic packaging pad it came with (another reviewer recommended it) and i feel like that helps me feel a little more confident in the padding, but i may just throw it out if it gets in the way. hope this helps anyone i know im satisfied! also, as a side note, this case fits your ipad EXACTLY, so there is no side padding or room. when i put that extra packaging padding in, i have a little difficulty closing the zipper b/c its just the perfect fit for the ipad and its protective case (assuming you have one around your ipad). thats why i said that i might just chuck the padding if it gets in the way.

Great Little Case 2010-04-22
By C. Cadenhead (DFW, TX USA)
This is a nice little case for an iPad or a netbook. An iPad fits nicely in it with not too much room left over. I was worried my iPad with a rubber protector on it would be too big for the case, but it just fit. After a few weeks of use my lime green one is holding up well and hasnt seemed to pick up an dirt or smudges on it. The zipper feels solid and I dont have any trouble zipping/unzipping it. The pocket could be a little bigger but there is enough room for an ac adapter and maybe an extra cord or two. I left the foam insert that comes with it in the case to help cushion and protect my iPad screen. The case seems to be as well made as the ones the Apple Stores are selling for a third of the price. Its a great buy.

Good looking & functional 2010-07-09
By D. Olson (Concord, CA United States)
I wanted this review to respond to kalistoga. The case has the advantages mentioned: nice case for the money, slim design, securely holds the iPad. It does not have a high quality leather feel (like a Coach product, for example), but it is very nice. The inside is a leather-like vinyl and the outside is an adequately nice leather. I am very pleased with how it looks. The overlap of the case and screen is a problem. But I think it is a minor problem. It is easy to adjust the iPad up a little to make the bottom of the screen fully accessible. I have cut a little foam piece and placed it at the bottom of the case to keep the iPad in the right place. An easy and adequate solution. Probably this problem will be fixed by the manufacturer in a future run. Until then, I would still highly recommend this case.

I received my order in 2 days and very satisfied. I will order from here again.

The Best Advertisement Apple Could Have For The iPad

Apple, no doubt, has a history of creating commercials that resonate with consumers. And with the recent Facetime ads, Apple has taken it one step further, appealing to the human emotion. But honestly, sometimes the best commercials are not produced by a big-name agency or a famous director. TechCrunch reader Paul Sanduleac sent us this video of his four-year-old brother using an iPad. It's nothing short of impressive.

Not only is the little boy able to swipe on the device, but he's taped playing various with apps, including a Keyboard app and a few games. You can see he's having the time of his life, while also interacting with the content and learning alphabets and colors as well.

iPhone and iPad Tips of the Week - September 23, 2010

http://www.maclife.com/article/howtos/iphone_and_ipad_tips_week_folders_and_high_contrast_mode
This week we'll take a look at how handy folders can be in the iOS Dock, learn how to create a special Apple logo folder, and practice a few tricks that make iTunes 10 a bit more palatable, Plus, we'll teach you about the new iPhone Field Service test in iOS 4.1.How to Access More Apps in the Dock Using FoldersYou can create folders in iTunes 10 in your devices App panel or your iOS device running iOS 4 or higher by dragging one icon on top of another. A default name will be offered by iOS or iTunes 10 that you can accept or change afterwards. You can then add up to 12 different apps to any of these folders, available on any Springboard page. If you are making these changes in iTunes, make sure that you hit Apply to save your changes to your device. The result is shown in the picture below with the expanded version above showing the contents of the Books folder.Compatibility: iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iOS 4 or higher. How to Create an Apple Logo Folder in iOS 4.0Here's a handy little tip that will let you create a folder in iOS 4.0 that contains the Apple () Symbol. It will appear similar to this when you are done: 1. On your iOS device tap and hold any app and drag it on top of another app. This will cause iOS to create a folder containing the two apps.2. Change the default folder name to "AppleLogo", tap anywhere on the screen outside of the folder to close it, and press the Home button.3. Connect your device to your computer and perform a sync in iTunes 10.4. Select your device in iTunes 10 and then select the Apps tab for that device.5. Double-click on the folder you created in Step 2 to rename it.6. Select the text "AppleLogo", press Option-Shift-K to replace it with the Apple () Symbol. Then, you can add any other text if you want, and press Return to make the change.7. Click the Apply button to sync these changes to your device.Compatibility: iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch running iOS 4 or higher. How to Transform iTunes 10 into High Contrast ModeApple shocked millions of iTunes users by substituting low-contrast, one color icons in iTunes 10. Depending on your opinion, that change was one of the most unappealing updates made from iTunes 9 to iTunes 10. This hint will show you how to change the icon's appearance to give you a high-contrast side bar and listing pane (and, hey, change things up a bit). 1. Close iTunes 10 if it is open.2. Open the Terminal application located within the Applications/Utilities folder on your Macs hard drive.3. Enter the following command at the terminal prompt and press Return to turn on the high-contrast icons:defaults write com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable -bool TRUE4. Launch iTunes 10 and check out the new icons. If you like them there isn't anything else you need to do, but if you don't like them go to Step 5.5. Enter the following command at the terminal prompt and press Return to go back to the low-contrast icons:defaults write com.apple.iTunes high-contrast-mode-enable -bool FALSECompatibility: Any Mac running iTunes 10.BeforeAfterBonus: Check Out Field Test Mode Returns in iOS 4.1There is a new limited version of the Field Test mode that has been reintroduced in iOS 4.1 after mysteriously disappearing in iOS 4.0. Simply launch the Phone app and dial *3001#12345#*, then press Call. Now you will see a number, representing the signal loss in dB, in the upper left side of the iPhone display. The signal bars on your iPhone will be replaced by a number. The higher the numeric portion of the negative number gets the worse your signal is. For example, -100 is worse than -79. If you tap on the displayed number the display toggles between displaying the number and the normal signal bars. The original field test mode in iOS 3.0 had a more robust set of features being reported, but signal strength is all you get in this version.Once you are done marveling over your signal strength press the Home button to exit. The signal strength bars will return momentarily.Compatibility: iPhone running iOS 4.1.Follow this article's author, David W. Martin, on Twitter.

In preparation for mass rollout, Square updates its iPhone and iPad apps

http://thenextweb.com/apps/2010/09/21/in-preparation-for-mass-rollout-square-updates-its-iphone-and-ipad-apps/
Square, the mobile payment system from Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, is beginning its march towards trying to become the leader in the mobile payment space.
Beset by several setbacks. First there were security concerns, followed by a lack of the Square card readers which connect to ones mobile device via the headphone jack. Those issues appear to be alleiviated with a mass roll-out of the service expected by the end of the summer, as other services, particularly Mophie, and Visa begin testing their own mobile payment solutions.
How will Square respond? Today we get a taste with the launch of an update to their iPhone app, version 1.3, which features:

Retina Display support for iPhone 4.
Improved first run experience.
Take cash payments even when offline.
Improved swiping reliability.
Improved tipping on iPad.
Improved support for multitasking on iOS 4.
Improved experience for unactivated users.
More accurate feedback when swiping incorrectly.
Fixes issues with geolocation on iOS 4.
And more.

Heres a video explaining Square for those unfamiliar with the product, click on the image to view the video in a separate window:

Are you a Square user? If youve signed up for the service, have you received your card reader? What appeals most to you about the service?

New BMWs To Sport Apple Interface, iPad And iPod Out Integration

http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/09/20/bmw-releases-ipad-and-ipod-out-integration/
The Paris Motor show is going on now. The usual car unveilings are a given, but also the shows are becoming a place for automakers to showcase and release exciting new tech. Take BMW, for example: they are known around the globe for making the ultimate driving machines. Now, they are entering the realm of being the ultimate connectivity machines.
Right now, we are witnessing a convergence in the way we run and drive our lives. We want to be connected at all timesto anythingso long as we are stimulated. For car companies, that means giving the people what they want. And what is that? Well we dont want any more half-baked attempts at a third-party interface, no more reinventing the wheel with the interface. Instead, how about a continued consistent look pulled straight from things were already accustomed to. I use an iPhone; I like the interface; why cant my cars display duplicate that? Apple isnt getting into the car business anytime soon.

Since the automakers are still lost, Apple has gone ahead and built a feature into iOS4 called iPod out, practically giving the people what they want now automakers just need to accept the loss and go for the win.
BMW doesnt want to make you learn another interface, because they know you really dont want to. Remember, they were one of the original OEMs to support the iPod.

Well now its official, BMW will have it out this year, and its also going to support the iPadbut they call it Original BMW Accessories BMW Carrier for Apple iPad Office Mode. (How official!)
Whats cool about this is that finally we can expect the same experience in our car that we do from our phone. You can do it by connecting though the dock connector or better yet, Bluetooth all navigated from the already in-car iDrive controller. The interface is Apples own, though its controlled from iDrive. Expect it to be similar to Front Row and to include album art.
For those with older iDrive systems, sadly there will be no upgrade.iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 and the second and third generation iPod Touches will be supported through the system. This is a really exciting turn towards a consistent interface among all cars, hopefully more automakers will wake up and drive the Apple Kool-Aid.
Note to automakers: We want to leave both our key and phone in our pocket upon entering the car. The key should open the car without the need for buttons and the phone should connect to the infotainment system with no cables. That is all we ask, its not that hard.

iSwifter Launches App To Stream Flash Games To iPads

http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/16/iswifter-launches-app-to-stream-flash-games-to-ipads/
Incubator YouWeb, which spun out gaming startups CrowdStar, AuroraFeint and Sibblingz, has launched cloud-based Flash streaming service, iSwifter. iSwifter is debuting an iPad app today that will allow developers to stream flash games to the tablet device.
iSwifter allows users to browse, play and rate Flash games from gaming portals on the web, with each game optimized for iPad. With With iSwifter, Flash does not run on the device at all but it is streamed to the tablet just like a Netflix movie or a YouTube video. So, game developers dont have to build a iOS specific app for their games, but can instead publish their Flash games to iSwifter.
The startup plans to bring its technology to iPhones, iTouch devices and Android smartphones later this year.
iSwifter faces competition from fellow game-streaming platforms Onlive and Gaikai.

Will Apple release iPad with FaceTime before the holiday?

http://www.mobilewhack.com/will-apple-release-ipad-with-facetime-before-the-holiday/
We discussed before how the iPad version 2.0 might be out before the holiday season, and now there is another rumor: it will have FaceTime.
If it has FaceTime, that means one thing: it has a front-facing camera, like the new iPod Touch. Of course, this report comes from a pretty reliable source, but we dont know what is going to happen until it happens.
Ive just got a terrific feeling that this could be true, but dont quote me on that, yet.

iPad headed to Target on October 3rd?

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/12/ipad-headed-to-target-on-october-3rd/
It's not quite the definitive proof that some boxes spotted in the wild would be, but a tipster has sent us a few pieces of a puzzle that seem to suggest that Apple could be expanding the iPad's retail presence into Target stores just in time for the holiday shopping season. That includes a list featuring a mysteriously unnamed product that's set to become available on October 3rd (in six different versions, no less), and a series of images from a Target PDA (like the one pictured above) that seemingly show that the item numbers match the iPad prices exactly, and that it will be located in the Digital Audio section -- that's apparently also how e-readers like the Kindle are classified, in addition to iPods. Smoking gun? Not exactly, but it's certainly enough to get us to keep our eye on this one.iPad headed to Target on October 3rd? originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 12 Sep 2010 16:02:00 EDT. Netbook Sales Are Crashing! Quick! Blame The iPad, Not The Lousy Netbooks!

http://techcrunch.com/2010/09/17/netbook-sales-are-crashing-quick-blame-the-ipad-not-the-lousy-netbooks/
Well what do you know? Netbook sales are so low right now that a recent report by NPD, Morgan Stanley Research lists last months sales as negative number. Thats right, people are apparently selling the notebooks back or something. (not really, but no one is buying netbooks right now)
Morgan Stanleys Katy Hubertys report is intended to show the state of the netbook market and since the iPad was announced, netbooks declinedsteadily. She states that the iPad is partly responsible to the loss sales. August saw a 4% decline over last years numbers and apparentlySeptemberwill produce similar numbers. If the back to school spending spree cant save netbooks, nothing can. Not even Santa.

Kinect sales will 'Blow away' those of the iPad -- at least that's what Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda thinks

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/17/kinect-sales-will-blow-away-those-of-the-ipad-at-least-that/
Microsoft Game Studios manager Kudo Tsunoda is usually known for his controversial choice of eyeware, but now it's what he's saying rather than wearing that is mixing things up. Kudo is so confident of his baby, the Kinect, that he thinks it will be the hot property this holiday season. He said this in an interview with Gamasutra:

The preorders have been really strong. As far as what we're looking at for Holiday, this is going to be stuff that'll blow away any of the sales you've seen with iPad... The Xbox 360 is already selling better than the Wii and Sony right now. Kinect's really just going to boost that to a whole new level.
For what it's worth we haven't been blown away by any of the launch titles for the thing, so we're not quite so confident of its impending breakout success. However, the Wii has certainly shown that people are willing to make frivolous gaming hardware purchases even when the software isn't there to back it up. We'll soon see if that mentality extends to pricey accessories, too.Kinect sales will 'Blow away' those of the iPad -- at least that's what Microsoft's Kudo Tsunoda thinks originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 17 Sep 2010 19:36:00 EDT. Rumor: iPad Hitting Target Stores Next Month

Apple's iPad has already done quite well already, thank you very much. Until now, the tablet has been available through Apple--via its Webstore and ever-growing list of retail locations--and Best Buy. The best way for the company to really hit a sales spike this holiday would be to ensure the device's placement in even more retail locations.

AIDACASE brings Keycase Folio Deluxe iPad case to to the US

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/16/aidacase-brings-keycase-folio-deluxe-ipad-case-to-to-the-us/
We hope you didn't go to the trouble of importing the Keycase Folio from the UK -- AIDACASE has just announced that it's making the iPad case available in the US in a slightly improved "deluxe" version. That naturally includes the same Bluetooth keyboard as before, but AIDACASE has opted to use a micro USB cable instead of an Apple dock connector for charging the keyboard, and it's added a new magnetic flap to keep the case securely closed. Otherwise, the case looks to be identical to the non-deluxe version, and it's available on Amazon right now for $100. Full press release is after the break.

iOS 4.2 on iPad preview (video)

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/15/ios-4-2-on-ipad-preview-video/
So we've just had a chance to take our iPad out for a spin sporting iOS 4.2... and it's pretty great. The addition of multitasking, folders, and big improvements in mail (amongst other things) finally make the device feel more like a computer and less like a gigantic iPhone. Ironic really, since these updates rolled out to the iPhone first. In our brief use of the new and improved iPad (and particularly with multitasking), we're impressed to see that there doesn't seem to be any lag or slowdown on the device while swapping between apps (despite the smaller amount of RAM on board here) or throwing together folders. We're pretty heartened to see performance matching what we've come to expect on our iPhone 4 -- admittedly we had reservations about what the experience would be like. Folders are an especially notable inclusion here due to the pure silliness of scrolling through multiple iPad pages, and we're happy to see them intact on the bigger device. This is going to be a huge improvement for general navigation. Otherwise, many of the odds and ends you know from the iPhone / iPod versions are here, though the new AirPrint and AirPlay functions have yet to make their way to any pieces of the OS that we can see.

One other wild thing we've noticed: the orientation switch no longer controls orientation. It's a mute / unmute switch now! We were pretty surprised to see the change, but it actually makes far more sense (orientation is now controlled with a button on the music / brightness widget). Of course, we're still exploring the beta OS, and we expect to uncover a few more morsels, so stay tuned to this post as we'll update with our discoveries. For now, you can continue on after the break to check out a video showing off just what a real world iPad looks like doing its 4.2 thing.Continue reading iOS 4.2 on iPad preview (video)iOS 4.2 on iPad preview (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 15 Sep 2010 15:23:00 EDT. New Kindle ad takes on the readability of iPad in the sun, doesn't have monster track

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/13/new-kindle-ad-takes-on-the-readability-of-ipad-in-the-sun-doesn/
This morning as we were brewing our coffee, we saw what appeared to be a new Kindle ad that mocked the readability factor of an iPad-like slate in the sun. The video turned a little weird, however, when, at the end we were greeted with a maniacal monsterish cackle. Unsurprisingly, we thought, "this is fake" and moved on with our day. Turns out, however, the ad is in fact real, sans the laugh track, of course, which was someone's idea of a great goof. The full ad is below.Continue reading New Kindle ad takes on the readability of iPad in the sun, doesn't have monster trackNew Kindle ad takes on the readability of iPad in the sun, doesn't have monster track originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 13 Sep 2010 17:59:00 EDT.
